Budapest – Eighty Bosch Engineering Center Budapest staff from the sensor development department, working on automotive yaw and acceleration sensors, decided that this year’s team-building exercise would not be hang-gliding or bowling, but voluntary work for people in need. The choice fell on the Child Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant Department of Szent László Hospital, which carries out life-saving bone marrow transplants on children. Since children spend their first month after the transplant without an immune system, they have to stay in sterile, separated rooms, and even afterwards need a clean environment and regular daily checks. This keeps them in hospital for between three and twelve months.
On 29 June, the Bosch team of volunteers deployed all of their gardening and DIY skills to spruce up this temporary living environment. They sanded and painted toys and benches, and pruned and planted greenery in the park. All of them were quite sure they had made the right decision, because they got back from the children and their parents several times the energy they put into improving the park and livening up the playground, in the form of a deluge of positive feedback. Through many good experiences and working together away from the office, the department has become a closer-knit team. Javier González Pareja, representative of the Bosch Group in Hungary, said that Bosch takes corporate social responsibility very seriously. “It supports and encourages company associates to give help to the local community.”
The Bosch workers managed the funds available for team-building so well that there was some left over for gifts. Football-loving boys and girls immediately got going on the table football, and the younger children happily started drawing and colouring in with the felt pens and crayons.
