Bosch’s manufacturing and development activities in Hungary support the company’s goals in future mobility, with a particular emphasis on electromobility. The 10 millionth electric steering unit has rolled off the assembly band at Robert Bosch Automotive Steering Kft. in Maklár, one of the largest Bosch factories in the world for electric steering units. Twenty years old this year, the company has become a leading player and one of the largest employers in the region. In total, around 6.5 million automotive products and parts are manufactured every year, which means that on average a product rolls off the production lines every three seconds.
Around 1,600 associates at the company’s both sites in Maklár and Eger produce steering systems for more than 50 vehicle manufacturers – for passenger cars and trucks, the list includes premium and electric brands. “We manufacture steering units, one of the most important parts of a vehicle, in a state-of-the-art, digitalized environment, supported by artificial intelligence. Our aim is to lead the way in the application of future technologies in collaboration with our partners, so that our groundbreaking products can be used to make driving more comfortable and safe,” said Michael Zink, plant manager of Robert Bosch Automotive Steering Kft. in Maklár.
In addition to the fact that the company uses the most modern, highly automated production technology, it also pays special attention to the education of its associates and provides continuous development opportunities in administration and manufacturing.
Production and development: next generation of electric steering
The 70,000 square meter, 10 football field-sized Bosch plant in Maklár plays an important role not only in the production of the groundbreaking electric power steering systems of the future, but also in the development of steering columns and shafts. On the one hand, it tests products under development and those already in production, and on the other, it is also a source of innovations. A team of forty engineers develops steering shafts and steering columns for buses and trucks, in an international environment, in collaboration with the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturers. They are also responsible for prototype production.

In response to the capacity increase, a new plant was built in Maklár, where production has been running since 2014. In 2015, Bosch became the sole owner of the company.
