In a new video, Bosch reveals how the world looks through the smart glasses of the future. The company’s newly-developed Smartglasses Light Drive system is an original, convenient and safe solution in everyday settings like car or bike navigation, shopping, and cooking.
In the video, we see how the smart glasses system connects to mobile devices to project information in front of the user’s eyes. So when cycling or driving a car, the wearer sees the route in a streamlined, holographic form. If you come to a road closure, an alternative route appears within seconds, and you can even check the state of the bicycle or car battery as you go along. When shopping, you no longer have to worry about forgetting the ingredients for the evening meal, because the glasses put the shopping list in front of you and you can even check off the items as you put them in your trolley. At home, the ingredients for the dish appear before you as a recipe, saving the trouble of leaving the cooker to look up the cookbook as the glasses take you through everything step by step.
Compatible with any kind of specs
Bosch Smartglasses Light Drive, as we can see on the video, is not a kind of spectacles. Weighing only 10 grams, it is a tiny device that can change nearly any traditional spectacles into smart glasses. It allows the glasses to display practically any information from a connected mobile device. The system has both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections and can be synchronised with smart devices, allowing messages to be called up instantly without touching the device screen.
The Light Drive projects information into the field of view, relieving users of the need to glance down at the smartphone. To reroute your journey or read messages, you just press the sensor built into one leg of the glasses. It is a safer and more convenient solution when doing something like driving a car. The technology opens up lots of actions that until now have only been possible with screen-based devices like smartphones and smart watches.
Holographic effect
Bosch Sensortec launched its smart glasses technology in January at CES® in Las Vegas. A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based light scanner in the Smartglasses Light Drive module scans the holographic element (HOE) embedded in the glass of the smart glasses. The HOE directs the light beam to the retina of the eye, so that the image it projects is always in focus. The high-resolution image is sharp and clear, with adaptive light intensity that keeps it clearly visible even in bright sunlight. Compatibility with curved and correction lenses is one of the technology’s major benefits, making it attractive to spectacle-wearing users.
The Light Drive system is the smallest and thinnest device available for customers. The device is 47–75 millimetres long, 5–10 millimetres high and 8 millimetres wide (depending on customer integration), and it weighs less than 10 grams. The Light Drive solution will be available to high-volume manufacturers in 2021.
